Oval Picture Frames – How to Select the Right Oval Frame

]]>

Searching for an oval picture frame and don’t know where to begin? Start with these four factors to consider – the use, the type, the style and the color of the picture frame.

What will you Use the Oval Frame For?

First, try to consider the photograph you’ll put in the oval picture frame. Does the picture have one or two people in it or is it a group photo?

Generally, an oval picture frame is best for portraits or pictures with very few people (perhaps one or two). If there are two people in the picture, they should be close to each other otherwise the photo won’t look right in an oval frame. To see whether this type of frame is a good fit for your picture, get an inexpensive oval mat to help you decide. Place the mat over the picture and see how it looks. This will help you avoid buying an oval frame that isn’t the right shape for your photo.

Another consideration is the location for the frame. Will it be displayed on a table, or hung on a wall? The location dictates which kind of oval frame to buy. The location will also help you decide which material would look best with your picture.

What Type of Oval Frame Do You Want?

Oval picture frames are available in different materials, such as solid wood, composite wood and metal. Consider the material carefully, because it may change the character and look of your picture.

Solid wood picture frames are easy to find because of their simplicity and minimal decoration. They are stained in a variety of wood tones such as light and dark oak, mahogany, rosewood and even a white wash stain so they can go with almost any home decor beautifully.

Composite wood frames generally have a more decorative look. They are usually made out of pressed wood because decorative features are less expensive to make this way compared to hand-carving. Additionally, ornamentation made out of composite wood is more durable and less likely to break than glued ones.

Metal oval frames are often found in smaller sizes and are designed for tabletops. You can find them in plain metal finishes or decorated with beads and crystals to give them a bright and colorful look. Metal oval frames are also available in wall picture frames however, they are not as common as there wood counterparts.

You also want your picture frame to suit its surroundings. Oval frames are distinct because of their uncommon shape so if you don’t want your picture to be eye-catching, it’s better to use another kind of frame.

What Type of Style Do You Want for Your Oval Picture Frame?

Are you after an antique look or a modern flair? There are many frames to choose from, and your picture is the most useful tool to tell which oval picture frame would be perfect for it. If you can’t use the picture, use these tips:

Pictures of boys and men are best in classic oval frames with minimal decoration. For young boys, oval frames with simple decorations can also look very nice.

Pictures of girls and women are great in traditional decorative frames. Pick something in your preferred style. However, if your oval picture frame has lots of decorations it may overwhelm the photo. The decorations should give the feminine touch, but not steal attention from the picture.

Black and white, old fashioned and sepia toned pictures go perfectly with antique and vintage styles. This type of frame has brown or black colored decorations on the frame so it looks more like an antique.

Artwork like acrylics or modern styled drawings would go best in a modern looking oval picture frame. These frames have moldings that are either completely flat or have a tube-like shape. Normally modern styled oval frames come in black, silver or white.

How to Select a Color for Your Oval Frame

Once you choose the style of oval picture frame that will look best, now it’s time to pick a color. When choosing a color for your frame always look at the picture first followed by where you plan to display it. Here’s my recommendation for when deciding color:

For black and white photographs- silver oval frames look best For sepia colored pictures- use a gold oval frame or an antique or vintage styled wood frame When in doubt- it’s hard to go wrong with vintage walnut or rosewood oval frames

When it comes to choosing the color, remember that it should blend with the location and the colors in your picture. Silver frames are commonly recommended for black-and-white photographs. For sepia colored pictures, use a gold or antique picture frame. If still uncertain, wood tones such as walnut or rosewood easily blends with common styles of home decor and photographs.

Oval picture frames give you a wonderful way to make your favorite photos stand out and display them in a stylish way that adds charm to your home’s beautiful decor.
